A little about this puzzle

Two pupils test a pair of paper-cup telephones beside a science activity table. A taut cord joins the two cup bases; one pupil speaks while the other holds a cup opening by her ear. A teacher watches from behind the table, with the school corridor extending into the background. A cord-length card, large spool, thick paper disc, hand magnifier and spiral observation notebook lie on the table. An ear-and-direction sign rests on the cupboard, and a single rubber finger cot sits in a tray by the window. Eight clue icons form one row; the connected cups count as one target set.
